Carey was a fashion model. She stands almost 5'10" tall, and was popular among top American designers, such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren as well as others. In 1979 in 1979, the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists named the father of her Scientist of The Year. In the course of his work, Carey was raised all over the world. When she was a student at the University of Colorado, Carey began to model on the side. An agent from Ford Model Agency in New York noticed her and was willing to assist. She briefly spent time and studied in Paris prior to returning back to New York. Her modeling as well as her college career took off and she was featured on the covers of Glamour's and Vogue's and many other magazine covers. She was a full-time student in New York University, obtaining her degree in literature between modeling assignments. Gradually she became interested in acting, and began studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. In 1986 she had her first performance as a small part in Club Paradise, with Robin Williams. She loves rock climbing ski, windsurfing, and skiing.
